PowerCage - Power Management Solution

By Marc Booth, RGB Integration

Equipment racks can become quickly populated in Pro A/V environments  and multiple power supplies can add further headaches making the available area quite cluttered.

Enter Extron with a new solution called the PowerCage 1600. This new modular power supply enclosure is able to accommodate a wide range of multiple Twisted Pair or Fibre Optic Transmitter and Receiver cards in any combination. With a 16 slot capacity the chassis can easily accommodate a large number of these cards in both single and dual configurations. Ultimately the biggest asset is the PowerCage's space saving abilities. In today's typical rack environments A/V real estate is the premium consideration. The 3U enclosure potentially gives A/V Integrators back more to work with.

With hot swappable cards and power supplies the PowerCage is ideally suited to mission critical applications where 24/7 operation is the requirement. The front panel provides constant feedback of power supply status, communications and alarm conditions for each of the slots.

If you are familiar with Extron's amazingly efficient Energy Star power supplies you would be forgiven for asking the question, which one would be more economical under comparable operation? Well the fibre cards actually consume the same amount of power but are slightly more efficient than their Extron shelf counterparts. The Twisted Pair cards use less power and become more economical again when no signal is present,
shutting down internal components and saving up to 50% of full load power, a feature referred to as intelligent power management.

Thermal management is always of particular importance, especially when you consider that every 10 degrees Celsius above the nominal operating temperature of the electronic component halves the life. Extron have put together a unique slot design  that channels the air through each board, delivering optimal cooling for superior reliability.
