The Retractor for Cable Cubby Enclosures

The Innovative Cable Retraction Solution
By Cornelius Chu
Innovation has always been one of the keys to Extron's success, the new retractor option for the Cable Cubby series is an excellent example. Extron has a long history of listening to customers feedback on products and then designing solutions to make them better.
"AV integrators and installers have long asked for a simple, robust, and cost-effective cable retraction system to use with our Cable Cubby enclosures," says Extron." The Retractor provides a quick, intuitive solution that's easy to install and designed for the kind of demanding day in, day out use that's common in schools, businesses, and other high-usage applications."
The Retractor by name simplifies cable management issues with cable cubby enclosures providing a straightforward, convenient solution for accessing AV cable connections and then storing them effectively. The cables can be extended outward from the enclosure up to 90cms and following use, with a push of the button, retracted back into the enclosure.
Although the concept initially sounds quite simple, Extron Engineers where especially conscious of how such a system could affect the integrity of the signal. Additional factors such as cable strain, installation, constant use and reliable performance also needed to be considered and tested for. The result is a unique patent pending cable retraction system, engineered with durable, dual pulley mechanism controlled by a constant-tension spring. It sounds impressive but what does this all mean? With Extron's design there are no breaks or further terminations to the cable within the chassis of the Retractor, doing so maintains the integrity of the signal. The cable is one full length, travelling between two pulleys connected by a spring. As the cable is extended the pulleys move together, allowing the cable to move out to it's maximum length. Pushing the button releases a brake, allowing the springs potential energy to move the pulleys apart again, thereby retracting the cable. Extron have designed and tested this system to exceed 4000 cycles; one cycle consists of a full extension and retraction.
Extron offers six retractor models to cater for the most commonly used configurations; VGA, PC Audio, USB, Cat 5e (network), DVI and HDMI.
